Boat Windlass Installation & Service in Miami

Anchor windlass install, repair, and rope/chain rode service for Miami cruising and offshore boats

The anchor windlass is one of those systems most Miami boaters ignore until it stops working. When it does stop, the options are an afternoon of manual anchor hauling or calling us. We install new windlasses on boats that never had one, upgrade undersized units, and repair the most common failures: motor brushes, gearboxes, deck switches, and breaker faults.

Windlass Brands We Service

  • Lewmar: V-series, Pro-series, Horizon, Sprint, and classic Lewmar units
  • Maxwell: HRC, VW, RC, and Freedom series
  • Lofrans: Cayman, Tigres, Royal, Falkon, and Project
  • Quick: Aleph, Hector, Dylan, Genius, and Prince
  • Muir, Powerwinch, and other specialty brands

New Windlass Installation

Installing a windlass properly is more work than most owners realize. The install includes:

  • Sizing the windlass to boat displacement and ground tackle
  • Reinforcing the anchor locker structure if needed
  • Deck cutout and backing plate installation
  • Waterproof sealing at the deck penetration
  • Heavy-gauge battery cable from windlass to battery
  • Dedicated 40-150 amp breaker or solenoid
  • Up/down control switch wiring (helm, deck, remote)
  • Chain/rope rode sizing and splicing
  • Anchor selection and bow roller alignment

A proper install takes 1-2 days depending on boat layout. A rushed install creates problems that show up 6 months later when the windlass fails from undersized wire or the deck leaks around the motor base.

Windlass Repair

Most windlass repairs fall into a few common categories:

  • Motor wont run: Usually a corroded deck switch, failed solenoid, or tripped breaker. We diagnose the circuit before condemning the motor.
  • Motor runs but windlass wont move: Gearbox clutch slipping or gearbox internal damage. Clutch adjustment or rebuild.
  • Runs slowly or weakly: Battery voltage drop from undersized cable, tired battery, or worn motor brushes. Load-test under anchor pull.
  • Chain jams in the gypsy: Chain wear mismatched to gypsy, or a twisted chain below. Chain replacement or gypsy swap.
  • Water in the motor: Failed deck seal. Replace seals, dry the motor, test under load.

Anchor & Rode Selection

We help owners pick the right anchor for Miami bottoms (sand, grass, rock, and mixed). The right anchor holds well on all three common Biscayne Bay bottoms. We also size chain and rope rode properly: too little chain and the anchor wont set well; too much and the boat hunts at anchor. Proper spec is usually 3:1 chain to depth in protected anchorages and 7:1 total scope in storm conditions.

Remote Controls & Chain Counters

Modern windlasses support wireless remotes, helm up/down switches, and chain counters that show how much rode is out. We install and configure these so deploying and recovering the anchor is a single-button operation from the helm.

Miami Windlass Specialists

Anchoring Miami Bottoms Demands Proper Gear

Miami and Biscayne Bay anchorages mix sand, grass, and rock bottoms. Some spots hold great, some are dragging nightmares. The right anchor and properly sized rode matter more here than in softer cruising grounds. Our team knows which anchors hold the popular Miami spots (Stiltsville, Haulover Sandbar, No Name Harbor) and sizes windlasses correctly for the ground tackle your boat actually needs.
