Boat Steering Repair in Miami

Hydraulic steering, cable steering, throttle and shift controls, helm pumps, and steering cylinders

Miami Steering Repair

Steering problems rarely show up all at once. First the wheel gets a little spongy. Then it takes more turns lock to lock. Then one day the helm locks up or the cylinder blows a seal at the worst possible moment. We catch steering problems before they strand you and fix them right when they happen.

Boat Steering Repair service

Hydraulic Steering Service

Hydraulic steering is the standard for anything over 25 feet or with larger outboards. We service the full range:

  • Helm pump repair and replacement (SeaStar, BayStar, Uflex)
  • Steering cylinder repair and seal replacement
  • Hose and fitting replacement
  • System bleeding and fluid refill
  • Dual helm and tie-bar systems
  • Power-assist steering (SeaStar Optimus, Yamaha Helm Master)
  • Electronic steering integration for autopilots

Common Hydraulic Steering Problems

  • Spongy wheel: Usually air in the system from a low fluid level or external leak. Bleed and refill, then chase the leak.
  • Fluid at the cylinder or helm: Seal failure. Cylinders are often rebuildable; helm pumps are usually replaced.
  • Hard-to-turn wheel: Fluid contamination, failing helm, or a bent steering cylinder rod.
  • Wheel spins without moving the motor: Internal helm pump failure. Replace helm.
  • Steering drifts one direction: Usually a cylinder shaft seal or internal bypass.

Cable Steering Service

Older boats, tiller-equipped boats, and smaller outboards often use rotary or rack-and-pinion cable steering. We service and replace:

  • Teleflex Safe-T, Big-T, and No-Feedback cables
  • Helm housings and wheel shafts
  • Rotary and rack helm units
  • Tilt tubes and bushings
  • Cable end fittings and motor-side hardware

Throttle & Shift Control Repair

Shift and throttle cables stretch, bind, or fail. We service binnacle and side-mount controls, replace morse cables, repair trim and tilt switches, and dial in shift linkage so you get clean, positive engagement without creep.

Power-Assist & Joystick Steering

Modern multi-engine boats often run power-assist or full joystick-controlled steering. We work on:

  • SeaStar Optimus 360 joystick systems
  • Yamaha Helm Master EX
  • Mercury Joystick Piloting
  • Volvo Penta IPS and Glass Cockpit integration

These systems need proper calibration and occasional error-code diagnostic work. We have the dealer tools for each major system.

Steering Cylinder Work

Outboard steering cylinders do the heavy lifting. Saltwater gets into seals and chrome-plated shafts pit over time, which accelerates seal failure. We rebuild cylinders when possible and replace when not. Every cylinder job includes new seals, new fluid, and a full bleed.

Steering problems never fix themselves. Call (305) 290-2701 or request service at the first sign of trouble.

Why Miami Steering Systems Fail Faster

Salt water is the enemy of every hydraulic cylinder and every electrical helm component. Miami boats live in salt water year-round, which means hydraulic seals, fittings, and cylinder shafts are on an accelerated wear schedule compared to freshwater boats. Our team sees the same steering failures every week: leaky helms, pitted cylinder shafts, corroded shift cables. We carry common SeaStar and BayStar parts in the truck to close out most steering repairs in a single visit.
