Boat Bottom Painting in Miami
Antifouling paint application for Miami boats kept in the water. Interlux, Pettit, Sea Hawk, and Awlgrip certified.
If your boat lives in the water in Miami, bottom paint is not optional. Warm, nutrient-rich water in Biscayne Bay grows barnacles, slime, and tube worms faster than almost any cruising ground in the country. A neglected bottom costs you 20-30% of your top speed and turns a simple scrape into a gouged-up mess. We handle the full bottom paint job from haul-out through splash.
Why Miami Boats Need Annual Bottom Paint
Most cruising grounds can get 2-3 years between bottom paint jobs. Miami is not one of them. Biscayne Bay's water temperature rarely drops below 70 degrees, even in January, and that warm water grows soft fouling (slime, algae, hydroids) in weeks and hard fouling (barnacles, tubeworms) in months. Annual bottom paint is standard for Miami boats that stay in the water.
Antifouling Paint Types
The right paint depends on how you use the boat. We walk you through the tradeoffs before we buy:
- Ablative (self-polishing) paint: Releases biocide as the boat moves. Great for boats that run frequently. Cleaner at haul-out. Works: Interlux Micron CF, Pettit Ultima SR-60, Sea Hawk Cukote Biocide Plus.
- Hard (modified epoxy) paint: Holds up to trailer boats, racing hulls, and boats that sit between uses. Needs more aggressive pre-splash cleaning. Works: Interlux Ultra-Kote, Pettit Trinidad, Sea Hawk Islands 77.
- Hybrid / dual-biocide: Combines ablative polishing with extra cuprous oxide for hard fouling resistance. Popular in Miami for slip-kept boats.
- Clear or metallic coatings: For performance boats that want minimal weight and drag. Shorter service intervals.
The Bottom Paint Process
Quality bottom paint is 80% prep. Here is what a proper bottom job looks like:
- Haul-out and pressure wash: Remove loose fouling and old paint while it is still wet.
- Bottom inspection: Check for blisters, gelcoat damage, or through-hull issues. Address any problems before painting.
- Sand and prep: Scuff or fully sand old paint based on its condition. Feather edges where paint has chipped.
- Mask and tape: Protect the boot stripe, running gear, and transducers from overspray and brush marks.
- Barrier coat if needed: First-time painted hulls or hulls with blister history get a full epoxy barrier system.
- Apply paint: Two coats minimum, three at the waterline. Roll and tip or spray based on paint type.
- Splash: Paint needs to go into water within the manufacturer's splash window (usually 24-72 hours) for full biocide release.
Running Gear and Running Surface Work
Bottom paint is a great time to catch up on below-waterline maintenance. While the boat is hauled, we can also handle:
- Zinc/aluminum anode replacement
- Shaft, strut, and cutless bearing inspection
- Propeller cleaning, balancing, or replacement
- Through-hull and seacock service
- Transducer cleaning or replacement
- Rudder and trim tab service
Haul-Out Coordination
We coordinate haul-out at partner yards in Miami, Coconut Grove, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale depending on your boat size. Boats up to 60 feet handle at most local marinas; larger sportfishers and yachts splash at the bigger yards in Dania Beach and Fort Lauderdale. We handle the yard booking, transportation, paint ordering, and full job so you never have to juggle vendors.
