### MerCruiser Alpha One Gen II

The Alpha One Gen II is on most cruisers and bowriders under 30 feet with single-engine power up to 4.3 liter V6 or 5.0 liter V8. Its weak points: gimbal bearing failure (clunk in reverse), bellows tearing every 2 to 3 years, and shift cable adjustment drift. We carry full Alpha bellows kits in the truck and replace them in the water at most marinas using a dual-engine cradle.

### MerCruiser Bravo One, Bravo Two, and Bravo Three

Bravo drives handle higher horsepower up to 525 hp on the Bravo Three X. The Bravo Three twin counter-rotating prop drive is the duty workhorse on 28 to 36 foot cruisers. The cone clutch in Bravo drives wears differently than the Alpha, and prop spin under load is the early warning sign. Bellows replacement is more involved on Bravo because of the larger gimbal housing, but the service interval is similar.

### Volvo Penta SX, DPS, DPR, and DPH

Volvo Penta drives use a different bellows system and different gear oil specs than MerCruiser. The DPS dual-prop is closest to a Bravo Three in capability; the DPR and DPH are higher-power applications on twin-engine boats. The Volvo bellows kit includes the U-joint, exhaust, and shift bellows in one assembly. We replace the full kit, not just the leaking piece, because the labor is identical and the rubber ages together.

### Common Sterndrive Failure Patterns

- Bellows tear from age and UV exposure, allowing water into the boat. Replace every 2 to 3 years on Miami boats stored outside.
- Gimbal bearings fail from saltwater intrusion through a torn bellows. Catch the torn bellows early and you save the bearing.
- Drive gear oil turns milky from a failed seal. Pull the drive, reseal, and refill before running again.
